You asked her out. She said "maybe".

You proposed something specific. What came back was "maybe", or "I'll let you know", or "let me check my schedule". There is no date in it and no refusal in it, and if you do nothing, it stays that way.

I appreciate the enthusiasm, but 'maybe' is what you tell your dentist. Let's try that again. Are you a 'hell yes' or a 'sadly no'? Be honest, I can take it.

What it means

What she's actually doing

A maybe is not a slower yes. It is an answer that costs her nothing and leaves the arrangement open for as long as you are willing to hold it, which is comfortable for exactly one of you. The thing to avoid is waiting, because waiting is what turns the maybe into the plan. Asking for a straight answer is the opposite of pressure, provided it is asked lightly: you are making it easy to say no, and that is what makes a yes mean anything.

Before you send it

When this backfires

Medium, and it is a real one. Asking her to choose can produce the no you were hoping to avoid. It produces it in one message, though, instead of across three weeks of a date that was never going to happen.

One line, written for your conversation

The text above works because of what it does, not because of the words. Screenshot the thread and Valerius reads what she actually said, where it stands, and writes the next message in your voice.
